NewEgg sells 300 counterfeit Core i7-920 CPUs, KIRFers pump their fists
Oops. Over the weekend, it seems as if 300 or so unlucky individuals were shipped a counterfeit processor from the normally reliable warehouses at NewEgg, and Hard|OCP has the images (and video) to prove it. Vincent Waller couldn’t have possibly been more eager to receive the Core i7-920 that he had ordered, but upon unboxing it, he realized that he had received a well-disguised fake. After a fair bit of digging, it seems as if one of NewEgg’s “long time partners” (D&H Distributing) got ahold of 300 fakes in a batch of 2,000, though not everyone’s buying the “it was an honest mistake” line — especially when you consider that said company has already issued cease-and-desist letters to the sites who published the news. At any rate, NewEgg has already arranged for an authentic CPU to be rushed to Mr. Waller, and it’s purportedly working around the clock in order to make things right with any other negatively affected customers. Hop on past the break for a look at the knockoff, particularly if you just took delivery of a shiny new Core i7.

Intel’s six-core Core i7-980X Extreme Edition ‘Gulftown’ chip goes on sale in Germany
Intel’s existing line of Core chips just not potent enough for your tastes? Sicko. For those who just can’t sleep without longing for the next best thing, it seems that said “thing” is just a few days away from a proper reveal. Germany’s own Alternate has already listed Intel’s six-core Core i7-980X Extreme Edition chip for sale, enabling moneyed consumers to snap up a piece of Gulftown for the princely sum of €1,049 ($1,430). Yeah, that’s a stiff premium for a six-core chip that’s ready to do more than sit snugly within some under-appreciated server box, but do you have any idea how much more bodacious you’ll be than your dual- and quad-core owning contemporaries? Way.
[Thanks, Peter]

HP ProBooks Get Prettier Inside and Out [Laptops]

And with a new brushed aluminum industrial design and Core i3/i5/i7 processing power, they may just bridge that gap./p
pHP’s rolling out four new ProBook models, ranging from the 13.3-inch 4320s to the heavy-duty 17.3-inch 4720s. In addition to those speedy Arrandale processors and “caviar” and “bordeaux” aluminum finishes, the new line-up also features optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4350 discrete graphics (compared with the a href=”http://gizmodo.com/5230540/hp-probook-s+series-businesspeople-can-have-sassy-red-laptops-too”previous generation’s Radeon 4330/a, HD LED-backlit displays, and an optional 2MP camera./p
pThe ProBooks also feature DayStarter, a feature that lets you view your calendar to distract you while your computer loads, and ArcSoft TotalMedia Suite audio and video editing software. WIth an optional 9-cell battery, the battery life is listed at an impressive 10 hours./p
pYou won’t find any USB 3.0 here, and the price pointsmdash;starting at $719 for the 13-inch base configurationmdash;are good-not-great. But if you need a work notebook with a little flair, and a home notebook with a little kick, ProBook might be your answer for both. You’ll have a chance to find out when they become available later this month. MSI converges everything with 24-inch 3D HD Wind Top all-in-one
Now here’s a spec sheet maven’s dream: MSI has just announced its new Wind Top all-in-ones, and the top model brings every modern spec you can think of. Full HD resolution, 3D capabilities with 120Hz refresh rates, Intel processors up to Core i7, and even multitouch adorn its list of goodies. The new flagships will be known as the Wind Top AE2420 in the 24-incher category and AE2280 in the 22-inch class. They’re joined by a selection of high-efficiency machines, such as the AP1920 and AE1920, which promise to cut down the electricity bills for “environmentally-minded business users.” That’s still hardly scratching the surface, though, as MSI is really preparing a small army of AIOs to display at CeBIT, and you can bet the house we’ll be there to touch and ogle at their latest and greatest.

Toshiba Portege M780 marries Core i7 with tablet ergonomics, goes official
What would we ever do without our eagle-eyed readers? Bob has spotted the above M780 tablet PC from Toshiba (which we first heard of a couple of weeks ago) on the company’s official site, though its product page has yet to be linked to from any of the home pages. So it’s official, but sort of prematurely so. Browsing through the spec sheet, this update to the M750 seems to lack for nothing, as its maxed out variant (priced at $1,799) offers a 2.66GHz Core i7-620M, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 7200RPM 320GB hard drive. Okay, you could stand to upgrade those integrated graphics perhaps, but it’s a potent package nonetheless. It’s also interesting to see these 12-inch convertible tablets maturing to the point of offering viable workstation performance, as the M780 is joined by Lenovo’s ThinkPad X201T and Fujitsu’s upcoming tablet in offering Intel’s finest and fastest dual-core processor inside.
[Thanks, Bob]
Update: Toshiba has completed the ceremonies of officialdom now, with a full press release, which also notes the addition of a multitouch panel to the Satellite Pro U500.
